Dan Finley to give Max Birnstiel Lecture

09 Sep 2019

The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) cordially invites you to attend the talk

'Global Remodeling of the Proteome'

By Dan Finley, Harvard Medical School

Date: Wed., 18 September 2019, 11.00 a.m.
Venue: IMP Lecture Hall,
Campus-Vienna-Biocenter 1, 1030 Vienna

Daniel Finley and his team at the Harvard Medical School study the ubiquitin-proteasome-pathway, a principal mechanism for protein degradation in eukaryotes. The pathway affects a large number of cellular processes and is highly regulated. Defects in the system can result in the pathogenesis of severe diseases in humans. The proteasome recognizes its substrates through attached ubiquitin moieties. In the past years, the Finley-lab has identified a number of factors that play a role in substrate recognition by the proteasome, including several distinct ubiquitin receptors. Current work aims at understanding the complexity of this regulation-mechanism and the role of proteasomal ubiquitin receptors in disease, particularly in AML where they have been shown to play a significant role.

Daniel Finley graduated from Harvard College in 1980 and received his PhD from MIT in 1984, having worked with Alex Varshavsky and in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Aaron Ciechanover. His thesis work showed that the ubiquitin pathway is essential in mammals and is the major pathway for selective protein degradation. In 1988, Finley was appointed to the faculty at Harvard Medical School, where he remains today as a Professor in the Cell Biology Department.

Dan Finley was invited to the IMP by Tim Clausen.

About the Max Birnstiel Lectures

The Max Birnstiel Lectures are a special series of seminars at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna. They are named after the founding director of the institute, Max L. Birnstiel, who passed away in 2014. Each year, five to six scientists are invited to deliver one of these lectures. Previous lecturers are distinguished leaders in their respective fields, among them a number of Nobel Prize laureates. The Max Birnstiel Lectures attract considerable attention in the wider scientific community and invariably draw a large audience to the IMP.
